Just a quickie… and a giveaway *GIVEAWAY CLOSED*

16 Nov

I told you I’d show you really quickly how I pieced together my Indians. It’s super easy, and even easier if you have a plain tombstone cookie cutter, which I didn’t have. I need to get one of those…

But since I don’t have one, I used these three sets of cutters:

The rectangle set, oval set, and the medium aspic cutter set. I have recently seen the light about the awesome versatility of the basic cutter shapes. Sometimes there just isn’t the “perfect” cutter shape, and you have to do a little doctoring.

So for for each pair of Indians, I cut one oval, one rectangle, and two teardrops.

Cut the oval and the rectangle in half.

Cut a little bit from the teardrop using the oval cutter.

Then put all your pieces together like a puzzle.

Then bake and decorate. I didn’t do a step-by-step tutorial on the decorating, but it was similar to the pilgrims. I used a 1 1/2″ circle cutter as a template for their heads, then drew on the hair, neck, shoulders and feather. I did the faces just like I did on the pilgrims.

I left the feather off of the girl, so if you have a plain tombstone cutter, she would be easy as can be. You could always add more than one feather too. Be creative. 🙂

I’ve showed you recently the fun things that you can do with plain rectangles and ovals. And I’m working on a top-secret project right now that I’ll post after Christmas that shows even more versatility with one of the basic shapes (can you guess which one?). It’s turning out to be lots of fun! So stay tuned for that…

But in the meantime, you need your own super-duper set of basic shapes. Comment on this post, and one lucky winner (chosen at random) will get the aspic cutters:

and the rectangle cutters:

And the oval cutters:

And the nylon circle cutters:

and the triangle cutters:

And the hexagon cutters:

and the square cutters:

And the blossom cutters:

AND a cool set of heart cutters that I don’t have a picture of because they’re not even in my store yet. But you’ll like them.

That’s a lot of cookie cutters!

Just comment on this post by Friday, November 18 at midnight (wherever you are!), and I’ll choose one winner using Random.org to win all 9 sets of cutters. Please enter only once. Good luck!

  56. Carrie Kyroauc November 16, 2011 at 9:20 am #

I tried to make the pilgrims and used a store bought sugar cookie dough. NEVER AGAIN! I learned my lesson not to use store bought dough. I laughed so hard at my pilgrim blobs when they came out of the oven. I quickly made a batch of regular dough and have been playing with it. I did try a bunny face upside down for the Indian girl. I have a tombstone cutter. Guess what I am doing today?
Thank you so much for your tutorials and blog. I have had a ton of fun the last few days making cookies and I made candy clay yesterday to put flowers out of for a cake I was making. I appreciate the time and energy you put in to help inspire us in our cookie creating!

    • Stacey McDonnell November 16, 2011 at 5:39 pm #

I dont know if you purchased refridgerated dough or the packets of dough that you mix yourself but as I have learned over the last 18 months or so in experimenting that you can use store bought if its the kind you mix but… you really have to know your oven and your pans. Sugar ,fat and levlener all makea difference in the way your cutouts come out in the oven. Its all in experimenting. Some ofthe things that could have gone wrong. Did you roll out your dough between 2 sheets of parchment? that helps jusrt remove the pieces that you are not going to use and roll those back into a ball. transfer the sheet of cutouts to the fridge could help if kitchen is warm then transfer to oven. Using a lighter brighter pan helps and use and oven thermomoter. sometimes you have to tweek the time and the temp too. Your oven may bake then better ata a little higher temp so you dont get spreading. The problem with the store bought too is the levener. You do not need levener in cookie dough or cut it as much as possible because it makes the cookies spread. You def need it in cake but it can always be removed in sugar cookies and gimgerbread. Hope those tips help. You may have to usea few of them to use shortcut store bought dough but it is possible to use it if you refridgerate your cutouts first and make sure that oven is good and hot .Less time for the dough to spread and that was my intention on your oven temp too. Raise it maybe about 10-15 degrees. Also if using the bagged mix use parchment always and do not grease your pan. The more grease in the recipe the more chance of spreading. I promise with a little experimenting it can be done. Best bet though id you dont have time to experiment just make some sugar cookie dough or shortbread is amazing for cut outs because they keep their shape due to the cold butter added. Id takea weekendand just make some dough if you have time and just freeze it into a log like the store bought kind and then pull them out as you need them. I hope you do not mind that I answered that instead of Karen . Just trying to help. Im sure karen has more tips for you as she is the seasoned expert. Best,Stacey M

OMG Karen You never ever cease to amaze me. You are the cookie queen. Funny I have most of these either on my wish list or wants for Christmas. You have inspired me to move forward with my passion. Well you and somethingthat happened to me 18 months ago. I was diagnosed with BC and at an early age but not in my 20s. Still young but not spring chicken. Well I went undiagnosed from my early 20 when I found something in my brest and had it imaged. Come to find out that the lump iwas feeling was nothing but because of family hu=istory I had it removed so i could sleep at night. Thank God for health and good insurance then, right? Well I have been getting imaged every since then and what i didnt know until diagnoses a little over 18 months ago was that they failed to ever sincetell me that sometrhing was brewing in the opposite breast all this time. Guees they forgt or because the other one was nothing they just didnt tell me. Fast forward 12 yrs the Saturday before Tgiving I was doing an exam in the shopwer and Did an exam andthe first thing my hand went to was a hard bb like lump in my breast the opposite breast. I madean appointment but couldnt get in before tgiving and had to go in on my bday of all days. So it was hard to wait but I got to go to NY for T giving and that helped well not really to gt my minfd off things. The docs kept saying it was nothing. Even th radiologist and the surgeon as well as pathology but my mind and body said something different. Anyway I had it taken out and the surgeon still said it was nothing. Well the pathology came back again and I DID have BC. Oh All theser thoughts went through my mind. My son my hubby all the things I wanted to do but never did because I took advantage of all the time I had off asa stay at home mom of a child who was npow in school. I used baking to keep my mind off things these last q8 months or so. I have had 7 surgeries and it should have been only2 but I went to reconstructive doc who told me he had 13 yrs experience but only had just gotten his licence to practice. He madea wreck of my chest and finally decided to change docs after 4 surgeries. Im on a great path now but your site and baking has helped me through and I think I really wantto makea go of it. With Each of the 7 surgeries has come a huge bill. The least expensive 38k of the bigger surgeries. I decided omn a double mastectomy with recon. I just had my 7th last Friday the 3rd of NOv. So Im on your site today to make a bigger wish listand see that some of the cuttrsI want are on this great giveaway. I had to work with the cutters i had andI do not have many and couldnt affrod more because the docs have to get paid. Your lessons and tutorials have taught me much and I am forever thankful. Even if I dont win I will just be happy to have crossed your path. I have never been able to order but when i did havea chance the cutters I did want were out of stock and you are so tiemly to let us know as soon as they are in stock. I dont know how you make the time for everything. You must have some sort of very strict schedule. I want to thank you for inspiring me and keeping me on my toes when icould have just curled up and layed in bed all day. Thanks for letting me share my story and thanks again for another great tutorial. Iso appreciate being able to come here and always find soemthing new to do. I am hoping that the wish list i make Santa see. even if he can only get one or two for me Iwill be happy. Be blessed and nbless you for all that you do Stacey McDonnell

That is an amazing story. Thanks for sharing. I’m Karen’s mom, but I know Karen would think the same thing. She is one busy gal right now! Appreciative people like you are the reason she likes to share so much of what she knows.

    • Karen November 19, 2011 at 3:58 pm #

Hi Stacey! Yes, my mom is right (Thanks Mom!) that I think you have an amazing story. I wanted to comment earlier, but I don’t usually comment on the contest entries because it messes up the random.org thing. 😀 So I had to wait till the giveaway was closed. I’m so glad you’re on a path back to health. Cancer is such an epidemic right now. My thoughts are with you and your family. I’m glad that baking has been therapeutic for you. I actually hear that a lot from people– that cookie decorating gets them through tough times. I’m glad I was able to help a little bit with it! Best wishes for your full recovery Stacey!
