I’m heading off to Cookie Camp! I’m going to Tennessee tomorrow to meet with some awesome cookie decorators and see if I can be a better one. I’m very nervous and feel quite inadequate. I’m trying to conquer my nervousness. I’m not sure if there is internet available at Cookie Camp, so I don’t know if I’ll be able to give you updates, but I’ll be sure to catch you up when I get back. I promise I’ll take lots of pictures! 🙂 In the meantime…
I told you when I came back after my summer hiatus that I wanted to fill the blog up with fall cookies… and so far I haven’t delivered. Until now!
One of my favorite new Wilton sets is this cute Witch-Themed Cookie Cutter Set. I love the boot, especially. I think it could pass for a Victorian boot, which I’ve tried to do before by hand cutting around a stencil. I was going to try one and show it to you, but my 3-year-old ate it. I’ll still try it sometime.
I wish I could say it was my 3-year-old that stuck her finger in that swirly purple boot. It was me. I do that a lot. Meringue Powder Buttercream is really pretty sturdy, but if you nick it in the first couple of hours, it’ll leave a mark. As demonstrated.
The brooms made me chuckle.
I try not to look at examples of decorated cookies when I’m thinking up my own designs– I don’t want to be influenced by other cookies. So I didn’t look at the example pics that came with these cutters before I started decorating. When I got to the brooms, I was like “What in the heck kind of design is this?” I could NOT figure out why it had such a large ring-thingy between the handle and the main part of the broom. I did the best I could, and after I was done, I went and looked at the packaging.
Ohhhhhhhh……. Right.
Hmm. I guess I’ll know for next time.
There’s also a cute witch’s hat.
(Insert apology for bad photography here). I’m hoping the cookie ladies at cookie camp can help me with photography. I need it!
And lastly, the cauldron.
I was really lacking in the creativity department when I did these, and it shows. Sometimes cauldrons are uninspiring for me. The one on the right was a bad idea that seemed good at the time. I wondered if I made purple swirls in the black, and then sprinkled the whole thing with black disco dust, if the purple would be very subtle and look cool.
Not really. Just made it look blotchy. But that’s ok. I like to show you the failures as well as the successes because if I only showed you the successes, it would be a pretty short blog. Ha ha… oh, and also because I don’t want you to make the same mistakes. Let’s just go with that one.
All together now…
I’m going to give a set to three of you. Just comment on this blog and you’ll be entered. I’ll go ahead and run it till I’m back from Cookie Camp– comment by midnight Sunday October 2nd. I’ll use our friend Random.org to choose 3 of you at random to win. Please enter only once. Good luck!
Love this set! I think the boot would make for a cute wizard of oz witch boot/ruby shoes! Have fun at camp!
I am just chuckling,, it is great when a decorated cookie can give you a good laugh! The hat and boot could build a witch,, using what for the body?? Now,, You’ve got me thinking!! Off to the cookie dough and cutters!!
I Love the Witch’s Hat & the Boot!!! Very cute!! I think Your cookies look adorable!!! Thanks for a chance to win!! Will give them to my DIL, if I win, as she is the baker in the family!!!
Hola Karen, que preciosos cortadores y que bonitas te quedaron las galletas. Me encantaria ser una de las afortunadas.
Un beso
Love the set… the colors you used are so cute. The purples and greens in addition to traditional Halloween colors really add that extra punch.
Those look like fun. For the cauldrons what about having it bubble over in electric green bubbles with luster dust? It could be a spooky brew!
Love these cookies!!! I can’t wait to make some. Thanks for sharing.
Your cookies are adorable!! Pick me! Pick me! :o)
Karen, you’re cookies are amazing! I think there will definitely be people in the cookie boot camp learning from you! I really want to start decorating cookies, but for some reason the royal icing intimidates me. Funny because I do all sorts of intricate cakes, but cookies… they scare me. hahaha. I’ll get over it, I guess I’m just a perfectionist and am weary of messing up. Gotta mess up alot though to get the technique right, right?! Have fun at cookie boot camp! BTW, love these witch inspired cookie cutters. If I win them I promise they’ll be my first decorated cookies and I’ll send you pictures. They’ll hopefully take me out of my cookie decorating hesitation phase. : )
You inadequate? Oh my, I wish I had just 1/10th of your talent.
Hope you get to do updates from camp. Have a blast.
Would love to win this set,
Susie
Super cute set!
Really Cute have a fun time at camp!
I think your designs came out beautifully. These are interesting cutters. Fun shapes. Enjoy your cookie camp!
Love the cookies. What type of icing did u use?
I LOVE what you did with those halloween cutters! makes me want them!! so cute!
I need that cauldron for a pot of gold on St. Patrick’s Day! I’ve been looking for one. Always happy to see your cookies!
I’m so jealous that you’re going to cookie camp! It’s funny though I was LOVING your brooms especially and then you showed how they were “supposed” to look. It’s interesting how critical we are of ourselves. You showed “mistakes” on your cookies and I seriously just oohed and aahed over the beautiful work you did. My favorites were the brooms, but I also loved what you did with the detail on the witch hats & shoes. Your idea of the cauldron was a good one. In the photo it doesn’t look blotchy, just creative. I can’t wait to hear ALL about cookie camp. I hope you have an amazing time! Cristin (Pinkie) of Cristin’s Cookies
They look great! And I like the cauldron with the purple. Would love to win these to play with them.
The cookies are cute especially the broom! I too lack creativity at times and always try to improve the next go around. Sometimes once you get started its too late to change direction. Have fun at cookie camp!!
I can’t believe you feel inadequate or nervous. Your stuff is fantastic and perhaps the “talented ladies” will learn something new from you. Good luck and say trip.
I love all of your cookies and tutorials! You’re an amazing artist!
What a fun Halloween Set!
I would love to win! Have a great time at cookie camp!

I think thru look great! Love the detail on the brooms.
Cookie Camp? How does one sign up for Cookie Camp….I want to go!!!!! Oh, BTW these cookies are amazing ~ even the cauldrons you don’t like very much Thanks
pretty cool!!!
Did you ever consider that you just might show the cookie camp ladies a thing or two, yourself? You did great on those cookies!
I am so glad you show all of your fun designs! Just because they aren’t YOUR favorite doesn’t mean they are failures by any means! I don’t think you’ve ever made a “not cute” cookie. I actually really like the purple swirly cauldron. It looks old and dusty and VERY witchy. Have fun at camp!
awesome karen
I love it
How fun! I love the cookies.
As I’m reading your blog my son comes up and says. “Those are really cool”. I guess I know what I will be making for his harvest dance.

This is a really cute set of cutters. As for the mistakes, I’m glad you show them. It reminds me that everyone makes them (Not just me!) and what we as cookie makers think are mistakes still look gorgeous to everyone else (since your cookies still look awesome to me).
For the photography, try using the macro setting on your camera. That always works for me. Good luck!
Very cute – don’t know how you’re going to get that much better, but have fun – wish I had your skills!
Have a good time. I wish there was a video feed for us to wannabes to follow along from home. Have a good time! I know there will be a rush of great posts from all of my favorite cookie queens next week. Oh and the cookies are awesome!
That is so funny about the brooms! Yours do look good the way you decorated them, though. The set itself is really cute and opens up the idea floodgates for numerous possibilities.

Hello Karen, I want to say that because of you got to decorate cookies here in Brazil, thank you for your videos encantei.O when I saw my only problem is that here in Brazil is very hard to find some ingredients and especially learning cortadores.Estou working with the glaze glace what the PAM uses, because I can not find the meringue powder to testar.Eu started doing glace common using egg white, I’m more worried about the durability dele.Então began to test other, I am at the beginning I have a lot to learn, the more I love it isso.Parabéns in your store, and your decorations that are lindas.É a pity that I can not buy online from your store, but I’m trying to adapt here mesmo.Um hug and stay with God!
