Goodbye Summer

9 Sep

It’s no secret to those who know me, or those who have been getting my newsletters for a while, that I love fall! I can’t wait to fill this blog up with fun fall cookies because they’re definitely my favorite.  But since I’ve kinda sorta been missing in action all summer, I figured I’d better at least nod towards summer. Briefly. And then we’re moving on to pumpkins and leaves, ok?

Apparently I forgot how to take pictures over the summer. Sorry these are so dark and shadowy.  I think I need a refresher course. Miiiiike!?

Wilton came out with this fun new set of cutters over the summer.

I didn’t get them until summer was almost over, but they were still fun to decorate.

I love the sunglasses.

I’ve really been wanting some larger sunglasses. The ones we have are teeny tiny, and the company who makes them disappeared off the face of the earth this summer, so we really needed a replacement.

The margarita glass is a cute size and shape.

Can you see the “Heat Green” disco dust on that margarita glass? It’s so hard to photograph. And along with that pesky fact that I forgot how to take pictures over the summer… I didn’t get a very good picture.  Maybe this angle is better?

Hmm. Not really. It’s so pretty in real life.  Guess you’ll just have to trust me on that one.

The flip flop is cute. I like it’s round-y-ness. (Yeah, that’s a word alright).

Here’s a pink set. Because pink is fun.

I liked how the sunglasses turned out in this one. I used some white non pareils from the Jumbo Rainbow Non Pareils as accents on the glasses. I pulled a bunch out of the jar with my accent tweezers, and then looked for two big ones and four smaller ones. They all vary in size slightly, but it works out well for stuff like this. The jumbo non pareils come in handy for so many things.

These were fun cookies to decorate. I’ll be excited to decorate more next summer– or maybe during the winter if I need a little summer back in my life!

So anyway, I feel bad that I totally neglected the blog this summer. I hope I still have some readers out there! I have 3 school-age kids and one preschooler, so I decided to take some time off and enjoy them this summer. We enjoyed swimming lessons, camping trips, family reunions, and lazy days reading books. It was a good summer and flew by.

How did you spend your summer months? Let me know in the comments section and I’ll randomly pick 5 of you to win a set of the Wilton Summer cookie cutters. Contest ends Monday night (Sept. 12) at midnight– wherever you are.  Thanks for sticking with me!! Hope you had a great summer! (Or winter if you’re in Australia…)

I have 2 little girls, so we played and visited family! Had tons of fun! These cutters are adorable! I’d love to win a set!

My summer fly by! I did lots (for me) of wedding cakes this summer, but we still managed to sneak in a little time for camping, a trip to ND and a day trip to Mt. Rainier. I feel pressured to get in a couple more summer things before it is gone again.

I stuck with you alright, even if that meant reading “Patriotic Stars” every time I opened your blog! It was worth the wait because these summer ones are too darling!. How did I spend my summer? Swimming lessons and family reunions as well. I did a lot more cookies this summer than I have in those past and I drove 2400+ miles to do some farming and canning—Totally worth the money in gas for the food I put in my pantry. Welcome back; I’m looking forward to autumn too! 🙂

  3. Susan Searles Schmitt September 9, 2011 at 5:30 pm #

I love your design turning the sunglasses upside down! For the summer I was busy in the kitchen, lots of shipping orders which is unusual for the summer. But like you, I come alive in the fall, probably because I have so many allergies and ragweed being the worse. By the first frost I am a new woman! Or is it because I have a fall birthday? LOL Anyway I love the autumnal colors and cant wait to break out the maroon, gold and orange ♥

Very cute cookies! Didn’t get to do anything much fun this summer. Working, helping both my girls move – in August, in North Texas – HOT! Looking forward to cooler weather

So excited to see your post again, Karen! This summer was the most exciting one for us (as parents) – my boys have gotten over the fear of water finally, and spent a lot of time in our friend’s pool. I was jumping up and down with joy seeing them so eager to get into the water instead screaming and crying their hearts out! lol…

You can always pick up with blogging where you left off. Such is not always the case with your kids so I’m glad to hear that your summer was spent enjoying time with them.

These cookies are great. I’d stash a few in the freezer just to pull out and eat in the middle of winter may help chase my mid season blahs away…just saying 😉

I spent most of my summer here at home but, I had fun making lots of cookies! I just made some cute hamburger and hotdog cookies for a BBQ that I got the idea off of from your cookie card. I am sad to see summer over but we had sooo many days over 100+ temps that I am looking forward to fall and making halloween and fall cookies.

  8. Gina September 9, 2011 at 5:45 pm #

My summer was much like yours. I did not do much. We did get a much needed vacation in with the grandkids and it was a good time. Baking was set aside but now that cooler weather os here we will be decorating cookies and cupcakes again!

  9. Gina September 9, 2011 at 5:48 pm #

Love the cookie cutters by the way!!

  10. Diane September 9, 2011 at 6:11 pm #

Oh well sounds like you spent your summer right where you should have .
We did much of the same some fun day trips with the grandkids and flower and vegetable gardening of course.
My area is just going into Fall and I can’t wait it’s my favorite season.

  11. LilaLoa September 9, 2011 at 6:16 pm #

Yeay!! You’re back! We missed you. I spent my summer wishing you would come back and blog more. 🙂 Actually…. my nephews came to visit me in Korea and we spent a good chunk of the summer swimming in the pool and at the ocean.

I can’t wait to see your fall cookies!

  13. Leigh Ann September 9, 2011 at 7:21 pm #

    Hey Karen!
We have missed reading your blogs, but the children and I check your site at least weekly to see if anything new is added. We love your cookies, and you have been such an inspiration. I think my kids think you are part of the family, as they often refer to you like, “Mommy, let’s check to see if Karen has any new cookies yet!” As if they know you by name! LOL!
Anyway, we have been busy with wedding and baby showers and plenty of summer birthdays. Check out our website as I am equally excited to get started on the fall goodies!
“See you soon” (wink wink, nod nod)
    Your Cookie Rookie,

We went to Maui for two weeks and had fun snorkeling and seeing all the colorful fish. Other than that just local stuff like going to the pool and trailering our bikes up to higher cooler areas to ride. It went too fast. Cute cutters!! You did an amazing job (as usual) decorating them. Happy Fall!

  15. Beth September 9, 2011 at 8:35 pm #

I spent most of my summer baking and decorating cookies lol!

    Thanks for the great contest!

  16. Cat September 9, 2011 at 8:40 pm #

Yes, I’ve missed you and wondered where you were; but sounds like you did the IMPORTANT stuff this summer! Me? I took off from baking cookies and worked on cakes and cupcakes. Next goal: 300-500 cupcakes in one day. Just because. No occasion. c@

  17. Cristin (Pinkie) September 9, 2011 at 8:55 pm #

Beautiful cookies as always Karen! My favorite is the red sunglasses. I’ve been wanting to add sunglasses to my bicycling cookies. You’re right that summer went so fast. I’m a summer gal for sure and not looking forward to the fall just yet. My son earned his Black Belt in Kenpo Karate and just finished his Eagle Scout project and my daughter just had a gorgeous wedding. It was an incredibly busy summer for us! I’m glad you’re back and love looking at your cookies! Thanks for sharing! Cristin (Pinkie) of Cristin’s Cookies

  18. Emily September 9, 2011 at 9:57 pm #

Those sunglasses and flip flops sure are fun! I don’t know what I’ve been doing this summer. It seems like it’s been really busy though. 🙂

  19. Lola September 10, 2011 at 1:42 am #

Wau!! I like all of them!! but the flip flop is my favorite!!
It is a long time since your last post. I am happy to see you again!!

  20. Susie Simser September 10, 2011 at 1:58 am #

We love our Harley so we spent as much time riding as we could. We also went to the NY State Fair for the first time and had some family weekends together. 🙂
I baked a few loaves of bread and I made decorated cookies for the second time. I’ve got to find some more time to do more.
    Love those cookie cutters.
Hope you post more often. I’m new to your blog and I’ve purchased from your site a few times.

I had a great summer. I was lucky enough to attend a very interesting educational conference in Washington, D.C. and then travel through Upstate N.Y. with my husband. The best part was going back to my hometown, where I haven’t been for over 32 years (!) and seeing the house I grew up in.

  22. Jessica September 10, 2011 at 4:11 am #

We spent the summer visiting friends and checking out the city. It was our first summer since moving to Southern Ontario, so it was worth exploring.

  23. Amy Ford September 10, 2011 at 5:21 am #

We enjoyed this summer by spending time camping, swimming and enjoying our family.

Welcome back! You were sorely missed, though I’m glad you were able to spend some quality time with your family. We didn’t do anything particularly exciting this summer, but the kids had a great time in day camp. Love your summer collection, especially the sunglasses with the non-pareils – what a cool idea!

  34. Lindy September 10, 2011 at 7:56 pm #

Cute cookies Karen! Seems like our summer just started and now it is over! We finished our yard (took the whole summer with all the rain we got!) got a fence almost-in, and worked in the garden! 🙂

  35. Tatyana September 10, 2011 at 10:20 pm #

I’m so glad to see your new post and new cookies 😉
This summer we went on the road trip to visit some friends. It was great!

    Hola Karen:

I spent my summer very opposite from yours. Seeing as I am single with no children, I spent my summer trying to kick-start my blog and create a side business out of my baking hobby. Baking has always been a fun stress-relieving hobby of mine since I was in high school. I decided it was about time to see if I could turn my hobby into something more (esp with the new Cottage Law being passed in Texas, I had to take advantage!).

I also discovered your site this summer and placed my first order of fun cookie supplies! Thanks so much for the great offerings in your store and I have learned so much from the cookie forum! 🙂 I am definitely a newly dedicated follower of Karen’s Cookies!!

  38. Karla September 11, 2011 at 11:34 am #

Glad to see your new entry. I’ve been decorating Halloween cookies for the last month, so I guess I’m looking forward to the fall too.

  39. jodi September 11, 2011 at 1:52 pm #

welcome back!! we celebrated summer by traveling in an RV with our 5 kids all around the beautiful state of alaska!!

  40. Mary E Stuckey September 11, 2011 at 5:54 pm #

I have five grandchildren now and spent most of the summer going to the park and spending time with them and their parents. Their age is 5 1/2 (twin girls) to 7 weeks old. I love making them cookies but my grandson is allergic to eggs so he gets shortbread cookies. I can’t wait for fall to get here and go to the pumpkin patches with them and picking out the Christmas trees. They are the most important things in my life.

  41. Megan September 12, 2011 at 12:27 am #

Hi Karen, these cookies are too cute! In South Africa, we’re heading for spring-yay! I have a 7 week old, so have definitely had no time to bake, never mind decorating cookies using your very cute ideas. Hoping I’ll find time soon though. I love love love your blog! Very excited when I saw your new post… 🙂

  42. Christine September 12, 2011 at 4:04 am #

  43. Christy Schumacher September 12, 2011 at 7:21 am #

We spent most of our summer at my families lake house. It’s only a 30 minute drive so every weekend we would go there. I my son turned 10 today and I have a 6 yr old girl so it was a perfect summer and I hate to see it end 😦

  44. Phyllis in Indiana September 12, 2011 at 11:49 am #

Love your summer cookies, and Yes, I for one (of many) missed your updates. My summer was spent working, (I’m happy to have a job), but I did enjoy the swimming pool more this summer than the past few. How the summer does fly by!

  45. Wanda September 12, 2011 at 2:00 pm #

I spent most of my summer taking care of my 3 year old grandbaby. And what a job that was, but we had alot of fun swimming and playing at the park.

  46. Marevy September 13, 2011 at 8:09 pm #

I spent some of the summer in the beach and our backyard pool when the weather permited, for Puerto Rico it was very wet and still is, with hurracaines coming one after the other! but the six of us together as one manage to do some stuff with the little ones.

  47. Jenn J September 14, 2011 at 9:48 am #

Did a little baking…using some supplies I order from y’all 🙂 Enjoyed the time outdoors, grilling, hanging out with friends. Glad you’re back and glad to year you enjoyed your summer like I did!

  48. yainea September 14, 2011 at 4:23 pm #

  49. Elena September 15, 2011 at 3:31 am #

I think I`m late for the giveaway but… never mind. Pleased to read you again. My summer hasn’t been funny because we have moved from one city to the capital of Spain, more than 700 kms far away. Of course my cookies items were the first things that came with me. Ready to start again and waiting for your ideas…

  50. Colleen Gura September 15, 2011 at 6:21 am #
