PME Tips

12 Apr

Here’s a little quickie about PME tips.

First a little background about me and PME tips. I’m a stubborn person. I learned to decorate cakes and cookies with Wilton and Ateco tips. They work fine. They cost about a dollar a piece, so I can buy lots and not sweat it too much when they get mangled in the garbage disposal. Which happens to me.  A lot.  So I kind of dug in my heels and refused to try the PMEs at almost $5 a pop.

Well, I started getting some requests to carry them in my store, and I have this thing about my store– “If I don’t love it, I won’t sell it”–  Soooo… I had to give in and try them out. And the results? Awesome!! How did I live without them?? My favorite by far for outlining is the 1.5. I keep asking Mike to bring me some home when I’m decorating, but we’re always out of them!! 😀 I just can’t keep them in stock.  So I currently have ONE that I wash out and use with all of my colors. Not even kidding.

So I had been meaning to write up a post extolling the virtues of PME tips when I got an email from one of our great customers, Kris. She did it just as well (or better!) than I could have, so I asked for her permission to share her great insights. So, from Kris about PME tips:

What a huge difference.. I am in love with them. I must order more very soon. I attached 2 photos of the comparisons of a PME 1.5   PME 2.0 and a Wilton 2.0    All with the same bag of icing withing 2 minutes of each other.. I am shocked at the difference. No wonder my writing always looked bad…. It was the tip all along. I have always had good penmanship except with frosting..I am in love with these new tips!
Kris

Here is the piping still wet:

And dry:

A few days later, Kris sent me a follow-up email:

Just another note to say how much better the PME tips work than Wilton. I am so convinced! I have told everyone I know about them and I hope you continue to carry them. I am attaching a pic of a  couple cookies  to compare.
Wilton tip #2 vs. PME tip #2.   It is like night and day!

The one on the left was Wilton #2, the one on the right is PME #2

Thanks so much Kris!!

Have you tried them yet? If you haven’t, here’s your chance. I’ll give one winner a set of every PME Supatube that we carry– 00, 0, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3— so you can try them out for yourself. Just comment on this post by Midnight Wednesday, April 13 ,and I’ll choose a winner using Random.org. Good luck!

I am fairly new to cookie decorating so I really had no idea that there was anything other than Wilton out there. I’ve never loved my writing with the Wilton tips and just chalked it up to my slightly shaky hands (which probably accounts for most of it!) but I would LOVE to have these PME tips! Thank you for the blog post. So informative!

  83. Baked Perfection April 12, 2011 at 2:08 pm #

I am so excited to try them. We do a lot of fine detail and writing and Wilton just doesn’t make the cut. I am hoping that these tips will allow me to really display the fine detail that we have always envisioned without all the frustation and killing our hands. Thanks Karen!!

  122. Liz Adams April 12, 2011 at 4:44 pm #

Wow! What a difference!!! I couldn’t belive my eyes! These photos truly show how much better PME tips are. I’ve been wanting to decorate cookies for the longest time. I even just pulled some frozen cookie dough out of the freezer that I didn’t finish using from 3 months ago to get started again. However, now I have to go out of town, so I had to put it back in the freezer. I would love to use these tips on my first set of decorated cookies when I get back!! I would send you photos of how they turned out if I won them. Keeping my fingers crossed and throwing some fairy/disco dust in the air for good luck!

  123. Julie April 12, 2011 at 5:02 pm #

  139. Cat April 12, 2011 at 7:23 pm #

Wow, Karen – AND KRIS! Thank you for showing us the difference that a tip can make! I have to do a cookie decorating demo for ladies at church in early May… and I still need to order a graduation mortar board cutter… and so many other things that I want. Plus, I’ve never even seen a size 0 Wilton tip and a reference book I bought recommends that size. Since I certainly am not very experienced, I could use all the help I can get with those tips!

  140. Susie Mellen April 12, 2011 at 7:37 pm #

I would love to try them, I have never tried to do detail work because I know it wouldn’t look good. I hope with these it just might look good.

  208. Mary Anne (Kalamazoo) April 13, 2011 at 3:24 pm #

I’m sold! – the PME’s seem like a surefire, dream-come-true solution for the dreaded writing, and win or lose, I’m going to have to get some!

  209. Lorna Putman April 13, 2011 at 3:42 pm #

Ok .. I am sold. I have always figured my Wilton tips were good enough … Now I don’t think so. Next Karen’s order will be for tips for sure.

  210. Karen Ristau April 13, 2011 at 4:43 pm #

I ordered 4 of the #2 from you and just love them. Also I ordered the Ateco(?) couplers and what a world of difference. You just have to cut a little off the bag and the ring screws right on. I always had trouble with Wilton but it was not until I read that others did too on your forum, that I switched. Now setting up disposable bags is not the chore it used to be. Thanks to you and the forum. Karen

  211. Susie April 13, 2011 at 6:14 pm #

I would love to try them out!

  212. Lorrie April 13, 2011 at 6:18 pm #

  213. Kim April 13, 2011 at 6:57 pm #

Sweet Sugar Belle also raves about these tips! I can’t wait to order some. Loved the pictorial comparison! Fingers crossed!

  214. paula c April 13, 2011 at 7:09 pm #

I would love the chance to try these out! I absolutely Hate my writing in frosting, I was thinking I was inept…I had no idea it could be my tips! Thanks for the info and the chance to win!

  215. Paula April 13, 2011 at 7:47 pm #

Wow I didn’t even know there was something better out there. I do calligraphy and try to write well on cookies but it just doesn’t turn out as great. With these I could make gorgeous cookies? LOVE your great decorating skills and hints. All my daughters are so impressed with your hints too.

  216. cookies n more April 13, 2011 at 8:10 pm #

  219. Audrey April 13, 2011 at 10:22 pm #

I haven’t tried PME tips, although I would love to!

  220. Sonia Eckley April 13, 2011 at 10:26 pm #

I can’t wait to try one of these tips!

  221. Elena April 14, 2011 at 7:44 am #

I haven’t used them and I would like to do it!!

  222. DianeO April 14, 2011 at 8:14 am #

I have purchased PME 1.5 and 2 but I still struggle with my writing. I think I have to continue working on getting the perfect icing consistency. It seems that it is either too thin and runs together or it’s too thick and I get frosting “curling” as it comes out of the bag. Maybe it’s my pressure? Not sure, but I continue to practice. I want to be able to display pretty writing on my cookies!

  223. Samantha April 14, 2011 at 9:07 am #

It’s a very noticable difference! I have a few already that I orderd from you 🙂
Thanks for the great post that reinforces their awesomeness!

  224. CathyN April 14, 2011 at 10:04 am #

Dang it! I wish I saw this yesterday. I think I threw one of my PME tips away by mistake when cleaning up after making some cookies for a baby shower!!

  225. Lisa April 14, 2011 at 12:59 pm #

OMG–I have 2 PME (0,00) that was ROAK to me

I NEED these tips-I swear everytime I do a big order that the money will go to new tips…..but I never do it.

  226. Kelly L April 14, 2011 at 5:47 pm #

I only have 1 PME tip… I would LOVE these!

  227. Lisa McGriff April 15, 2011 at 3:59 am #

I would love love love some of these tips…

  228. Kara April 15, 2011 at 1:15 pm #

Wow–that’s amazing. I am just a cookie decorating novice, who has been on a long break, but I’m getting ready to do a bunch of cookies for a fundraiser next month for my disabled brother…how I’d LOVE to own those for some lines that seem to be much more forgiving to a less than perfecting icing consistency!

  229. Martha in Virginia April 16, 2011 at 2:36 pm #

Oh, writing is the thing I dread on cookies. Maybe a new tip would help??!! Thanks for the info.

  230. Brenda April 17, 2011 at 12:43 pm #

Increíble diferencia!!! nunca hubiese pensado que fuera así, yo solo uso las wilton, mil gracias por el tip!!!

  231. Deborah April 18, 2011 at 1:01 am #

Great giveaway! My frosting tip collection is tiny, I’d love to add to it! 🙂

  232. Kacie April 24, 2011 at 6:35 pm #

I would LOVE to win these tips. Have wanted to try them for a while now. Just one of the mannnny on my list of would love to haves! Thanks for the wonderful contest!

  233. natalia February 7, 2012 at 10:07 am #

OMG !!! I need to try it !!! Could you to send to Mexico ???

  234. Catherine February 11, 2012 at 9:53 pm #

I’m looking into buying these on the PME website. Do you know what the difference between the Carded and Uncarded tips are?

    http://www.pmeartsandcrafts.com/en/search?orderby=position&orderway=desc&search_query=calligraphy&submit_search=Search

    • Karen March 14, 2012 at 7:36 am #

Hmm…. I don’t know for sure, but I would guess that it’s just the packaging. Carded usually means that it’s on a card for retail display purposes, and uncarded would just mean they are loose tips. I think the tip itself would be exactly the same.

  235. Kathy Kmonk (Cakes On The Lane) March 14, 2012 at 12:55 pm #

I’ve been hearing such wonderful things about these tips but haven’t been able to bring myself to spring for the nearly $5 price tag. Sounds like I’m going to have to break down and give them a try.

    • Karen March 14, 2012 at 7:11 pm #

Kathy, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. I recommend just starting with a 1.5 and see how you like it. That’s what I started with, and I was hooked!

  236. Jeri April 2, 2012 at 5:01 pm #

Seeing is believing and these pictures have made a believer out of me! I’ve spent years eating beautifully decorated cookies with writing so sloppy nobody else ever got to see them! Who knew Wilton tips were responsible for these 20 extra pounds I’ve gained from ‘eating my words’?

WOW!!! Those are some convincing before and after pics! I’m a beginner at decorating but, as an experienced quilter, I know that investing in tools that help reduce frustration makes a HUGE difference in the enjoyment of your craft. SOLD!

You know a lot of people don’t seriously know the benefits of writing a blog. Or simply how much effort that goes into creating a blog site. Truthfully running a blog is often a lot of fun in addition to a smart way to improve your brand or company.

Karen, I am a true believer in PME tips too. I teach cookie decorating classes and I tell them my 1.5 is my secret weapon. The only problem I have is that sometimes it pops out of my Wilton coupler. Is there a better fitting coupler for the PME tips? Love your store!

Hi Carla! Sorry for the delay in responding. I actually prefer the Ateco coupler for the PME tips. It seems like it fits a little better than the Wilton ones. Hopefully that solves your problem!
