First Post!

8 Jan

It’s kind of funny starting a blog, knowing that there aren’t any readers yet.  So to whom do I write? (and do I need to use perfect grammar, or not?!)  I guess I write to all of those who will find us along the way. I’m so glad you found us, and I hope that you’ll enjoy reading my posts and be inspired to try some fun new things in the kitchen.

I guess a little “About Me” might be nice. My name is Karen, and my husband Mike and I run a little online cookie supply shop called Karen’s Cookies. I love the art of the decorated cookie, and most of my posts will revolve around that subject.  As much as I adore decorated cookies, I also thoroughly enjoy many other types of baking, so you will see posts on other subjects sprinkled in. I’m sure that drop cookies, pies, pastries, cakes, breads and other goodies will find their way onto the blog occasionally. (Oh, and since I have a store, and because I can, I’m sure that giveaways will abound!)

This is me at the shop. It's probably the last picture you'll ever see of me. Cookies are much more exciting!

I started a blog several years ago when we opened our shop. My pictures were horrible.  Beyond horrible. UG-LY. I would show you one, but they have long been deleted and (hopefully) forgotten. One of my favorite things about blog hopping is the beautiful photography, and my own blog certainly wasn’t delivering.  So I kind of gave up, while still wishing I could create a fun place to share my kitchen adventures. Recently Mike and I got to talking about giving it another try. He taught me what he knows about macro and aperture and shutter speed, and we’ve invested in some decent lights for the kitchen.  So far the results have been fun and exciting! Hopefully I can keep all the camera settings straight and continue to improve my skills with time.

Thanks again for stopping by! Feel free to comment, make suggestions, or just say  hi. I’d love to hear from you!

Happy Baking!

I love that you have a blog. You have given me the nerve to try and decorate cookies. I have had this on my bucket list for A LONG time now. I have 2 little boys that love to eat cookies, why not make them cute. Love your videos and store. Kudos to you for living your passion. I can not wait to try your heart cookie techniques.

Wow Aimee! How did you even find me? You’re my very first comment, and probably my very first reader (besides my mom and my friend Rachel!) Send me your email address and I’ll send you a “prize” for being my first commenter. 😀 Thanks!

Oh– edited to add my email: contact at

Yippeee……Karen is blogging. I’m so excited. I just found this. Funny…..I was looking at the stats on my blog and one of my refer-ers (is that a word?!) was this blog. lol

I’m so happy. Hey…..would you do a guest post on my blog. I just did one on Haniela today. I’d love to do one on you. please, please please??? 🙂

Karen… never cease to amaze me. All the things you guys do for cookie decorators……love it!

Can’t wait to see what you do next.

Oh….and please show us your set up for photography. That is one are that I’m lacking. I don’t want to spend a ton of money…..but I want my cookie photos to look excellent.

Hugs to you, my friend…….welcome to the blog world. 🙂

    • Karen January 11, 2011 at 3:48 pm #

Pam, it’s funny how you found me, because that’s exactly how I found you, too! 😀 You were a referer (I think that’s a word, but the spell-checker doesn’t!) to my site.

I’m not sure what I’ve gotten myself into here… I spent hours getting posts ready yesterday. Will I get faster?? The cupcake frosting post took FOREVER (it will be up shortly), but I guess it’s especially long. I need to stick with decorated cookies!!! 😀 If I keep taking this much time, I’m going to have to sell the business and give my kids to the orphanage.

I’d be honored to do a guest post on your blog! Let me know what I should write about!

As soon as I learn a little bit more about the photography (still having some issues!) I’ll do a post where I show you my set-up! 😀 I actually just bought a lighting set-up, but I’m sure you could rig one up yourself by looking at it.

Anyway, thanks, Pam!! Glad you found me! 😀

Hi Karen, I’m so happy to see your blog, I used to have a blog too, but my husband accidentally deleted it… maybe some day I’ll give it another go. But anyhoo, glad your blogging, you and Mike are wonderful and I always look forward to your post on CookiersRUs.

    • Karen January 26, 2011 at 9:08 am #

Natalie, how does one’s husband accidentally delete a whole blog?? Yikes! That actually sounds like something I would do. I guess I’d better be careful!! 😀

Ha ha. I love the very first posts of a blog! There is something special about writing for an unknown audience. I love it. I love all your cookie things, and I can’t wait to see what your blog will bring! (And your pictures are fantastic!)

    • Karen January 12, 2011 at 8:41 am #

Yeah, I sat there for quite some time wondering what to say in the first post! Ha ha… It’s all a little easier from there! Thanks for visiting!

  9. Emily January 11, 2011 at 5:29 pm #

Your blog looks amazing! I love the layout and colors but I’m mostly drooling over your photos! If it’s not top secret, I’d like to see more of your set up/learn what kind of camera you have. Goodness I have a lot to learn. Sorry if I commented too many times. 🙂

    • Karen January 12, 2011 at 8:42 am #

It’s definitely not top secret!! Come over anytime and I’ll show you. I’m in the kitchen all week baking, so I’ll be around! (As long as you don’t mind the mess….) And you can comment as many times as you want!

  10. Wendy Scarbrough January 11, 2011 at 6:26 pm #

Great blog Karen and so exciting!! I love the cupcake blog as I made cupcakes a lot before I found you and the others in the cookie forum! I can’t wait to try these flavors! I always made the ordinary choc, vanilla and yellow varieties with a really nice whipped icing but NOW….well… I think I will knock a few socks off my family members come Easter (our next get together!)

    • Karen January 12, 2011 at 8:46 am #

Thanks, Wendy! I was thinking as I made all of these that I really need a party to cater or something, because I think a cupcake dessert bar would be so fun to make! (And then I wouldn’t be the one eating them all….) I bet you could flavor up your current icing with some of these ideas too, if you don’t want to switch icings.

  11. Karen January 12, 2011 at 8:16 pm #

Ok, I think I’m going to have to stop responding to each post individually. I’m starting to get lost!! 😀 Thank you to all of you for your kind comments!! I really appreciate your thoughts!

    Hi Karen,

I just love your shop and your twitter and now a blog? Amazing! I had not found you on facebook prevoiusly but now I have, and I LIKED you, too!
If I were to win the $100 gift certificate the first thing I would buy is the Wedding Cake Cookie Decorating Kit, I have had my eye on that for a while now 😉

Just found your site today via youtube- so excited! I’ve always been intimidated by these sort of sugar cookies but I really want to learn how to make them. I watched all your videos! I will be placing an order soon!

I am enjoying your blog….from the beginning!!! Your cookies amaze me, they are almost too beautiful to eat. Can’t wait to see what comes next. And thanks so much for the tutorials and videos, they help so much for the cookie challenged.

  23. Karen January 26, 2011 at 9:06 am #

Ok, I’m REALLY bad at responding to everyone’s comments, but I want to thank you for all of your encouragement at the beginning of this blog adventure. Thank you thank you thank you thank you for your thoughts!!

  24. Jennifer February 8, 2011 at 2:05 pm #

Karen, I have learned so much from your videos and tutorials. I found you via You Tube video on cookie decorating. Last night I copied your Valentine heart cookies and gave them to the teachers at my daughters preschool, and we ate a few ourselves. They turned out beautiful and it was easy. Thanks for helping me look like a pro, like you 🙂 Now I’m addicted.
